Eating Locally: South Austin's Most Kid-Friendly Restaurants

If you read this blog, then you know that we don't get out much. "Eating in" is kind of a way of life for us - but we do occasionally venture out for breakfast, lunch or dinner with the Kid in tow. Whenever we do, we try to keep it local and show some love to the many great, locally-owned restaurants in Austin. Here's a few of our favorites for restaurants with a kid-friendly atmosphere:

Kerbey Lane Cafe - With locations throughout Austin and seasonal specials made with local ingredients, Kerbey Lane offers a casual dining environment with good food. The service can be a little slow at times but it's one of our favorite places for Saturday morning breakfast.

Galaxy Cafe - Breakfast, lunch or dinner, Galaxy is another of our "go-to" restaurants for take out or dining in. The relaxed environment and "real food" kids' menu have made it a favorite for our family.

Waterloo Ice House - The Waterloo at Southpark Meadows is adjacent to "The Grove," a playscape and public space shared by other restaurants and shops in the Southpark Meadows shopping center just off of Slaughter and I-35. With patio seating right next to the action, Waterloo offers parents pub grub choices in a kid-friendly environment. If you're looking for a place to grab a beer, burger, and fried mushrooms and other classic bar fare that also has something to offer the tot set, Waterloo is a good choice.

Doc's Backyard - Located in the Sunset Valley shopping district, Doc's Backyard is another playscape-adjacent option for days when you just want to relax with good food and your family. Doc's offers patio seating as well as picnic seating right next to the action.

Phil's Ice House and Amy's Ice Cream - The South Lamar location of these two Austin standards features a small enclosed play-yard.

Hat Creek Burger Co. - Located out in Bee Cave, the southern-most site of the Hat Creek Burger Co. features a play-yard along with their "burgers and fries" menu.

And if you're looking for a guide to all the best Austin has to offer, check out the rest of the AFBA City Guide - you'll find posts on everything from cocktails to dessert, dives to fine dining.

Doc's is a great pick! We haven't been in a while, but it's nice to let the kids run around. I think they also allow dogs.
